Senior Citizen Academy Scheduled

There is still time to enroll in the Chesterfield County Police Department’s Senior Citizen Academy, which begins on Tuesday, May 11. Students will meet on Tuesdays from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Clover Hill Police Facility, 2730 Hicks Road.


The 10-week class focuses on crime-related and public-safety issues that can impact the senior community. Department members lead classes about police department functions, crime prevention methods, personal safety, emergency communications, identity theft and fraud, volunteerism, special response teams, investigations and the Crime Solvers program.



The program is free for citizens 55 years old or older who reside, work or own a business in Chesterfield or belong to a county civic organization. Class size is limited to 25 students. Applications will be accepted through April 16 and may be downloaded at www.chesterfield.gov/police.aspx?id=2496.

Long-Term Vision for High-Speed Passenger Rail

Charlotte - Raleigh: Nearly 30 inter-related projects will be undertaken in order to increase top train speeds to 90 mph and double the number of round trips between the two largest cities in North Carolina, serving 3 million people. Work includes the purchase and rehabilitation of locomotives and cars, track upgrades, and station security improvements.

Raleigh - Richmond: Important congestion mitigation will involve construction of four new crossovers, which will reduce trip times. It will also aid the future development of high-speed rail lines between North Carolina and Virginia.

Richmond - Washington, D.C.: New high-speed rail track, more than 11 miles in length, will be built between Richmond and Washington, DC. This project will eliminate one of the most severe bottlenecks along an extremely congested area on the Southeast Corridor. Improvements to the route will improve on-time performance and lay the groundwork for future high-speed rail in the region.

Summary of Corridor Investments

e Southeast Corridor connects Charlotte, Raleigh, Richmond, and Washington, D.C. North Carolina and Virginia have a strong history of supporting passenger rail services in their states, and have engaged in substantial planning and efforts to develop high-speed rail on this corridor. Several of the metropolitan areas in this region are among the fastest growing in the nation, and the states have recognized the need to invest in a diversity of transportation infrastructure that will accommodate this population growth.

The long-term goal for this corridor is top speeds of up to 110mph, reducing trip time by one-third from Washington, D.C. to Richmond, and to four and one-half hours between Richmond and Charlotte.

Eventually, the Southeast Corridor is expected to use Atlanta as a regional hub, with connections from Atlanta east to Charlotte, south to Macon and Jacksonville, north to Chattanooga, and west to Birmingham.

Spring is finally here!!!!! LANDSCAPING NEWS


MULCH: I hope you have noticed the fresh mulch in your yards, if you have not the workers are on their way. Due to wet weather they have been slow.


MOWING: Unlimited plans to start mowing this week, weather permitting.


SPRAYING: They plan to start spraying this week. The spray will have crabgrass pre-emergent, selective herbicide for weeds, insecticide, and liquid fertilizer in the mixture. The spraying will take approximately 4 days (weather permit, wind and temperature changes). SHRUBS: Unlimited will start spraying shrubs this week for insects


Backflow re-certification & starting irrigation systems: They plan to start that next week. PLANTS: PLEASE NOTIFY ME IF YOU HAVE DEAD PLANTS, SHRUBS OR TREES.


REMINDERS:


PLEASE SECURE RECYCLE MATERIALS ON "PICK UP" MONDAYS. The gusty and often strong winds of early Spring can blow items throughout the neighborhood. "GIVE A HOOT-DON'T POLLUTE."

ANIMAL CONTROL LAWS RULED INVALID

All Home Owner Asso. covenants and all local laws requiring dogs to be kept on a leash and requiring owners to pick up after their dogs have been ruled invalid.

An irritated animal owner in Oak Grove, Va., mounted an exhaustive search of the entire Code of Virginia Law for all references to dogs and other animals. He came across a long-forgotten law enacted in 1867, just two years after the War of Northern Agression (known in the North as the Civil War). It was put into the Virginia Code by the Yankee carpetbaggers who ruled Virginia at that time, as part of their campaign of revenge to teach "Rebels" a lesson.

The newly discovered law forbids any restraint on any animal, and owners are not allowed to pick up after their animals. Severe penalties are attached for violations. The law can be found in the Code of Virginia at Chapter 14, Emblements, #113.

Our Home Owners' Asso. plans on calling an  emergency meeting soon to revise our Covenants accordingly.

HOORAY!!!  Our plague of pooping geese have been gone for several weeks now, thanks to the work of the Border Collies from Windchazer Management Company. Thanks also to our HOA Board for hiring Windchazer and to Mitchell Patterson for his work on this effort.
